The former could quickly be offset by being able to play some time later. The school area could be defined from a table, require chairs (and possibly other tables), and on a regular basis all children could gather into the building along with the teacher noble to receive lecture. On the flip-side of that, they'd get unhappy thoughts if there's nowhere for them to play or nobody for them to play with.Īs for labor training, what about a school? You could appoint a teacher noble that can train the little bastards to be useful so when they hit adulthood they have dabbling or non-adjective skills in random trades. Just like with the 'Attending a Party' activity, they'd make new friends and get happy thoughts from being able to play with their friends and their toys. In lieu of that, they could congregate in meeting areas and dining halls instead, toys in hand if they have them, to engage in a 'Playing' activity. Good kids, bad kids, might be an element worth looking into.Ī possible way to handle the play-time bit would be to have children congregate in park-like areas, the Dwarf Fortress version of a park being a statue garden. 'Melvin Troublebrewer' picks up a miner's pick "A stray kitten has been struck down!", etc. Maybe the kids could put on a play or puppet show for everyone in one of the meeting rooms, giving everyone who sees it a happy thought. Maybe make good kids clean up around the fort, without ma getting PO'd. On another flip side - Child labor! Force those little buggers to slave away at a craftdwarf's workshop making bolts, but ma might get a little PO'd that junior can't just play all day. Kids could play with each other and raise the comedian, etc skills in the process. Station a guard dog outside and those goblin babysnatchers will have a harder time getting the kids. Having the 'toy box' room could make keeping the kids safe more manageable. On the flip side, if a kid is stolen and he's made friends with a dwarf or 3, there could be some tantruming dwarves all of a sudden. Good kids could seek out unhappy dwarves and play with them to make them happier. Give adult dwarves happy thoughts by playing with the kids. Some ideas to make children/babies worth having in the fortress:Ĭreate a 'play room' room designation designated by the placement of a toy or 'toy box' - give the kids a central place to gather maybe playing with certain toys could raise certain skills for when they become adults later.
